Nature & Conservation at Weir Wood Reservoir

Tucked away in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Weir Wood Reservoir is more than just a place for adventure—it’s a vital haven for wildlife and a special place for nature lovers.

From birds skimming the water’s surface to butterflies dancing across wildflower meadows, Weir Wood is home to a wide variety of species, including some that are rare or protected. Whether you’re spotting great crested grebes from the hide or walking the quiet woodland trails, there’s always something new to discover.

The Nature Reserve

The western end of the reservoir is designated as a Local Nature Reserve, carefully managed to protect habitats and encourage biodiversity. This area is especially important for birdlife, with year-round sightings of kingfishers, herons, and even the occasional osprey during migration. Quiet observation areas and designated paths help keep disturbance to a minimum while allowing visitors to connect with the natural world.

Friends of Weir Wood

The Friends of Weir Wood is a passionate volunteer group dedicated to conserving and protecting the unique environment of the reservoir. Working closely with local authorities and conservation bodies, the Friends group helps maintain habitats, monitor wildlife, and educate the public about this special site.

Their work includes:

  • Organising conservation work parties

  • Conducting wildlife surveys and monitoring species

  • Improving access and signage in the nature reserve

  • Hosting open days and educational events

New members and volunteers are always welcome—whether you’re an experienced naturalist or just looking to get involved and give something back to your local green space.
