Our History

Weir Wood Reservoir, created in 1954 to supply water to the region, has since evolved into a site of remarkable ecological and recreational significance. Recognising its importance for wildlife, it was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1966. The shallow western end was later established as a Local Nature Reserve, providing a protected habitat for birds and aquatic species.

Long before the reservoir’s construction, the area was characterised by iron-rich streams that supported a thriving iron industry dating back to Roman and medieval times. Today, remnants of ancient foundries can still be seen along the riverbanks, offering a fascinating glimpse into its industrial past.

Since its creation, the reservoir has gradually transformed into a haven for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and watersports fans. The recently renewed Weir Wood Sport and Leisure now offers a fantastic range of activities for the community, clubs and individuals alike. Whether you’re a seasoned water sports enthusiast or a beginner keen to try something new, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Beyond its waters, the reservoir is an excellent destination for walking, photography and simply soaking in the beauty of the great outdoors. Combining recreational opportunities with breathtaking scenery, Weir Wood Reservoir is the perfect place for both adventure and relaxation.
