Our History
Weir Wood Reservoir was created in 1954 to supply water to the region. Over time, its ecological importance became increasingly evident, and in 1966 it was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the diverse wildlife it supports. The shallow western end of the reservoir was later set aside as a Local Nature Reserve, ensuring a protected habitat for birds and aquatic life.
Long before the reservoir was built, the area was home to iron-rich streams and a thriving iron industry dating back to Roman and medieval times. Today, remnants of ancient foundries can still be found along the riverbanks, offering a glimpse into the area’s industrial past.
Since 1954, the site has slowly involved into a haven for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and water sports fans alike.
For those looking to make the most of the reservoir’s waters, the recently renewed Weir Wood Sport and Leisure offers a fantastic range of activities for the community, clubs, and individuals to enjoy. Whether you’re a seasoned water sports enthusiast or a beginner looking to try something new, there’s something for everyone.
In addition to water-based activities, the reservoir is an excellent location for walking, photography, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. With its combination of recreational opportunities and breathtaking scenery, Weir Wood Reservoir is the perfect destination for adventure and relaxation alike.
